Velocity or Momentum?

While watching practice, ask yourself the following question:

What’s more important to teach your young swimmers — To be able to achieve the highest velocity in the pool, or to maintain your momentum?

Which do you focus on more in practice?

Do you spend more time having the swimmers swim long distances, which will require the ability to maintain your momentum for longer periods of time?  Or do you spend more time doing shorter sprints, focusing on developing the ability to achieve the highest rates of speed?

Neither is exclusive, while neither can be ignored.
