Breaststroke - Narrow to Wide Pull

If you’re still searching for the ideal breaststroke pull, and most everyone should be, don’t be afraid to go to extremes.

Why do it:
Breaststroke continues to show us the most variations in successful styles.  Make sure you’re exhausted all types when developing your individual technique.

How to do it:
1 – Start with the smallest pull possible, it may feel like you’re only sweeping your wrists out.
2 – On each stroke, or every couple strokes, allow the hands to get a bit wider.
3 – Continue to allow the stroke to get wider, until your hands feel like they’d be touching each lane line.

How to do it really well (the fine points):
Getting caught in the same old stroke can be harmful to your potential.  Understanding that different people will have different strengths, and finding yours may be the answer to a more successful career.

Work with your coach closely on this one.  Count strokes per length, get your times, and check your heart rate.  The best stroke will always be an individual combination of width, frequency, and power.  Keep searching.
