Our last in a fun series from Pine Crest School in Ft. Lauderdale. We continue to use the stretch cord as a target with an old standby drill, Tennessee Turns.
- Dave Denniston's Breaststroke Turns DVD shows this skill!!!
Why Do It:
You can refer to our old standby, Tennessee Turns, and think of this as a way to get people to improve their turns while demanding they accomplish the task, rather than trusting that they do.
How to Do It:
1. Place a line of stretch cord at, or just outside, the flags. This will be the target.
2. When the swimmer gets to the cord, they must go under water.
3. They can do either a flip turn or an open turn at the wall, but they must stay under water during the push off until they get past the cord again.
4. Simply put, anything between the cord and the wall is to be completed under water.
How to Do It Really Well (the Fine Points):
Add the cords to just about any normal set, requiring the swimmers to make the intervals or target times, and watch how they figure out better ways to get through their turns. Also, if they do flip turns, they'll really experience how much resistance they create unless they stay in a very tight ball.
