Kingdom Swim Challenge for Glenn & Barbara

After working with open-water superstar Fran Crippen to create a new Go Swim DVD, we (Glenn and Barbara) were inspired to try a little open-water swimming of our own.   Our search for an open-water breaststroke championship turned up nothing, so we settled on an event where at least there will be frogs in the water doing our favorite stroke.  The event, called Kingdom Swim, is held on Lake Memphremagog, in the heart of the remote Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, one of ten geotourism areas in the world specially designated by National Geographic.

Kingdom Swim, scheduled for Saturday, July 24, 2010  is a competitive and recreational charity swim for all skill levels, young and old, offering distances of 10 miles, 3 miles, 1 mile, 1/4 mile, and 100 yards.  Glenn has targeted the 10-mile swim; Barbara is going for the 3-mile swim.  This will be quite a challenge for two freestyle-challenged Masters swimmers, but we've already started our training and will share some of it with you in the coming months.

Kingdom Swim is a charity event that raises money to support a Vermont-based recreation program called the Healthy Changes Initiative.  It helps people manage, contain, and improve chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.  Their program really works, and they've developed some innovative ways to keep people motivated and healthy.  If you'd like to make a pledge to support this cause and to give us extra incentive to train a whole lotta FREESTYLE, here's where you can do that.

Kingdom Swim is still taking swimmers, so if you'd like to join us (and the frogs and Memphre, the mystical Lake Memphremagog sea serpent), check it out at the Kingdom Swim website.
