Taking you on a short journey down Vermont's Ottauquechee River, which was hit by Irene last Sunday. The second video shows the Taftsville Covered Bridge. It's still standing but closed until further notice. Barbara's house is about 80 feet from the far side of the bridge that you see at the end of the video. Her house stayed dry and her backyard pool is intact. Whew.
Three miles downstream from Taftsville, the Ottauquechee runs through the middle of the Quechee Club golf course (see photo below). The course is now a sea of muck and breached propane tanks, but their 25-yard pool is sparkling and ready for lessons, just a few yards from the edge of the flood water.
One mile downstream from the golf course and the "miracle pool" is the village of Quechee (see first video), where the river narrows and where the Quechee Covered Bridge was destroyed. Two days after the storm, crews were already at work to restore the bridge.
